To do useful things and live useful lives is the goal of our life. We have been taught that way by society, parents and teachers.
If we consider what are actually useful actions, we consider only those actions that produce results are useful actions.
We expect the results of our actions in some form, be it material, monetary, relationship or promotions. If there are no such benefits, we consider the actions as futile.
What can be the meaning of the Gita's statement that if we want to do such beneficial actions, do the duty and do not expect the results.
When we look for the benefits of actions, we miss the present beauty of those actions. As Osho says, if we are more useful, the world makes good use of us.
Some say they turn time into money. It is also a testimony of our proper management of time. But we fail to think one thing we can never convert money into time.
Uselessness also has some natural uses of its own. If you are useful to others, your time will be taken away from you.
If something is worthless, it means you enjoy it. You don't expect any profit from it.
Those who do what is useful are doctors, scientists, and those who do productive work. Poets, nomads and monks are considered to be doing useless things.
But rather than useful people, they make the world colorful. People who think they are doing something worthwhile increase their bank savings in the outer world but earn nothing for the inner world.
Many people find it difficult to understand that an activity can keep the happiness within the activity itself.
For example, when you enjoy a natural scene, you feel a sense of joy within yourself. It does not seem to be of any use. Such manifestations are actions for the soul.
Whatever happiness is created in you while doing it can give you soul satisfaction. That is why in those days they called the work is God we must worship it
Any action that could be enjoying such as a child's laugh or taking a lesson or even lifting a limb.
It doesn't matter what the action is, the mental maturity to do that action deeply without expecting any result is put forward here.
Those who do action without expectation of reward are blissful both in the inner and outer worlds.
